New Breast Implants By Dr. Sutton Graham on May 12, 2012

There are some new breast implants to talk about.  Mentor Corporation and Allergan Medical produce the familiar, FDA approved saline and silicone-gel filled breast implants.  These companies have been a stable feature of the US breast implant market for decades.  Sientra Corporation's gel implant and Ideal Implant company's Ideal saline implant are both new.

Sientra only produces gel breast implants.  It is a newly formed corporation in southern California, that purchased the assets of the former Silimed, Inc.  Their series of silicone gel filled devices are FDA approved for marketing and sale in the United States.  There are some differences between these and previously available gel implants.

The Ideal Implant is newer and must submit to the FDA and get additional approvals before availability in the USA.  They their implant will contain only saline, but have a specialized multilayer shell to improve contour and feel.  This could make saline implants good choices for even more women seeking breast enlargement.  We'll have more to report as additional studies are available.

Until then Dr. Graham continues to recommend FDA approved saline implants as the safest and best choice for most patients.

“I cannot recommend Catherine Crain, NP, enough! She's kind, professional, and truly knows her stuff. I trust her completely and would recommend her to anyone considering botox, filler, and lasers”
